THE NEW OBLIGATIONS OF SCIENCE
|
1. The face of earth has changed 2. What has changed the face of earth is Science 3. The environment as changed by Man is compelling Man to change. 4. Being involved at the source, Science can and must assume responsibility for this unprecedented mutation. 5. Science is an integral part of human culture, of which it is, today, a foremost and exemplary part part. As such, it must tell people what it is and what it is not, what it knows and what it does not know, what it can do and what it cannot do, what it must do and what it must not do. 6. Science is exemplary because of its exacting intellectual and moral approach, accepting as it does, as a permanent exercise, the questioning of its method, its knowledge and its existence. 7. Science is exemplary because it places in the service of Mankind a unique and living cultural heritage - knowledge of the essential processes of the universe, of matter and of life, with the prospect of an increasing, relative and properly reasoned mastery of these processes, which involves the responsibility of Science.
Consequently: 8. Science can and must now control the chain of activities by which its fundamental discoveries are transformed, so as to prevent any irresponsible misappropriation. 9. Science can and must strive to put right the disorders already caused. 10. Science can and must contribute to the elaboration or the reconstruction of the value systems that are the basis of any civilization |
