Global Appeal from Scientists to Leadership

The text of the appeal is available at http://www.johannesburg-appeal.org

André Lichnerowicz, Founder and Former President of the WIS

For the first time in History, an independent organization, springing from an awareness of the new obligatory responsabilities of scientists, brings together the scientific creative elite at world level.

Founded in 1991 mainly at the initiative of the Professors of the Collège de France, the World Institute of Science (WIS) to-day numbers a hundred of the most eminent scientists of the world, 30 of whom are Nobel prize winners.

The WIS has the following cardinal principles : the highest level of scientific competence at world level in each discipline, the highest level of awareness of the obligatory and unprecedented responsibility of scientists, and the highest degree of independence.

The WIS considers that the duty of Science is first and foremost to provide objective information about major planetary risks, most of which stem from insufficiently-controlled applications of important scientific discoveries for civil and military purposes.
